Susan's Snippets

All of us at CRS would like to take this opportunity to wish you good health, prosperity and happiness for 2007.

At this time of year, I like to look in the past to see how we've progressed.  So this issue is focusing on updates to the topics I featured in January 2006 and January 2005.

CRS is hiring!  If you know of anyone with a couple of years working experience who would be interested in working as a Recruiter in our Energy Division, and is good at selling and communications, then ask them to contact me at editor@crsoilandgasjobs.com or click on Energy Recruiter Job to send their resume.

NOTE:  Back issues of CRS NEWS are published at http://www.crsitjobs.com/Newsletter.htm.

Information & Communications Technology Society

Our January 2006 newsletter (http://www.crsitjobs.com/Newletters/CRSNews-information%20technology%20professional%20society.html) featured the ITPS - Information Technology Professional Society.  This organisation has undergone some radical changes and is now called the ICTS - Information & Communications Technology Society.

The new name is more representative of current technology and implies a broader scope than its previous name.   Briefly, the ICTS intends to:

1)  be more representative of the various segments that impact its policy goals, as well as those groups that may affect the ability of ICTS’ members to conduct business within and outside of Trinidad and Tobago.

2)  fulfil its advocacy role for the IT industry, by becoming the authority on ICT issues.

3)  establish itself as the voice of action on all local ICT matters as  well as those within the region.

4)  develop the IT Professional at the student, individual and corporate level.

5)  use its resources more effectively.

For more information on the ICTS, including photos of the recent ICTS Annual Dinner at the Hilton Trinidad, and guidance on how to become a member, please visit www.icts.org.tt.  The new ICTS website will be kept up to date and there are plans to make it more interactive so that you can express your views on various topics.  I'll keep you posted.

Predictions for the New Year

Our January 2005 newsletter (
http://www.crsitjobs.com/Newletters/CRSNews-Predictions%20for%20the%20New%20Year.html) featured 4 main predictions for the I.T. job market

1.  More Movement in the T&T Job Market.
There's no doubt that the market is more buoyant than ever, as our I.T. placements have increased by over 140% from 2005 to 2006.  Also, over 14% more I.T. people registered with CRS in 2006 than in 2005.

2.  Improvements in Telecommunications.
Thank goodness that high speed internet is much more accessible, but it's still too costly for many small businesses, and still not lightening fast.  But it will come.

3.  Greater Demand for Highly Skilled I.T. People.
We have had to discourage foreign companies from setting up in T&T as we do not have a plentiful supply of very experienced and highly technical I.T. people with skills such as C++, C#, cryptography and security programming.
We need foreign organisations willing to train good local talent so that our people can get the experience (so that other companies can poach them?)  Doesn't sound likely, unless the foreign organisations can see the potential of our talent, and the other benefits of setting up business in T&T to make their investment worthwhile.

(Immediately after writing this, I got a call from a company that helps US companies to set up operations in Trinidad.  They are dealing with a couple of companies who want to recruit 100's of software developers for Trinidad in the next couple of years.  They recognise that Trinidad is booming and has excellent potential and they're willing to train locals.  Am I psychic or what?).

4.  Brain Drain of Skills Overseas.
I have no statistics on this but as I started writing this sentence, I had a visit from an I.T. person I've known for many years, and he was telling me that he plans to emigrate to give his family better opportunities in Canada, with less crime.  This is becoming a common story, and I hope that confidence in our country can be restored to reverse this trend because now is a good time for I.T. professionals to live in Trinidad.
