All of us at CRS wish you and your family a happy,
healthy and prosperous 2006.
It was interesting to look back at last January's
newsletter when I made some predictions of trends for 2005. Certainly the
job market in T&T continues to be buoyant as our economy is enjoying oil and gas
wealth. We have had a lot of requests for Oracle skills, for instance, as
corporations are spending big bucks on upgrading their systems.
Deregulation of the Telecomms industry has been slow to come to fruition in T&T
so hopefully the benefits will be realised this year. We have been getting
requests to supply skilled people to Canada and other countries so the brain
drain is on its way.
Apology: If you received unsolicited responses to
subscription requests, please ignore these. It was due to a hiccup in our
mailing program which started reprocessing old subscription messages for some
reason. I am still not sure why it happened so please bear with us should
it happen again.

I referred to the ITPS in November's newsletter and I would like to expand on
this valuable organisation and encourage you to join. Note that membership is
also open to overseas I.T. practitioners.
The ITPS was established in
1994 by a group of proven I.T. leaders in Trinidad. The objectives of the
organisation include conducting thought provoking sessions on I.T. subjects,
working to provide accreditation for a suitable certification of IT
professionals in Trinidad & Tobago, and generally fostering greater partnering
in the IT industry.
The ITPS is a member of the
World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) and is
therefore involved in global policy issues such as Internet Governance. The
ITPS also has a close relationship with the local Ministry of Public
Administration and Information and is forging stronger ties with the local IT
vendors.
One of the interesting
innovations introduced in 2005 was an I.T. Managers' Forum which meets regularly
to discuss important issues relevant to the profession. Topics selected for
discussion include Disaster Recovery, Staff Retention, Information Security, I.T.
Standards, I.T. Certification, Remuneration and Outsourcing.

ITPS Council 2005-2006. From bottom left clockwise:
David Soverall, Susan Hale, Marion Sampath, Carolin Beharry, Ghislaine Agostini,
Dhankuarie 'Dee' Francis-Lau, Rabindra 'Danny' Jaggernauth (President). Missing:
Peter Mitchell, Nigel Mahabir.
The Council is currently
conducting planning sessions for 2006. The overarching theme will be “How can
I.T. transform T&T” and the following are being considered:
- Lobbying
- IT and Crime Management – How can
I.T. impact upon challenges in T&T?
- Institutional Strengthening
- Government support for ITPS
- IT Support for Government – health, education, etc
- Role of the Private Sector
- Recognition of I.T. Achievers and Innovators
- Job Creation
Why should you join the
ITPS? Here are some benefits that I polled from Council members:
1) Networking with similar
member professionals for -
shared learning, advice, references, problem solving and career development
opportunities
2) Opportunity to attend I.T. focused meetings/lectures/workshops at preferred
prices
3) Opportunity to guide the I.T. industry in Trinidad and contribute at the
national level - ITPS is usually contacted by government agencies, international
bodies, etc.
4) Enhance your
professional standing, image and marketability.
Please check
http://www.itps.org for more information and an application form and latest
membership prices which have been kept at a very affordable level. There are
different classes of membership: Student, Associate, Member and Fellow,
depending on whether you have a degree in I.T. and number of years' experience
in the industry. You can also email
apply to ITPS here for an application form. Please also submit your resume
to describe your credentials.
Note that there is also
Company Membership which allows for discounted membership for at least 5 staff. |

Letters to the Editor:
Are Trinidad IT staff getting wise?
The trend in the USA & Europe for IT staff to remain in
a company for two to three years and then move on is well established. But is
this trend starting to be established here? For years the benefit to IT
professionals is to work on interesting projects, with a preference for
state-of-the-art technology and to have a glowing CV filled with neat stuff,
.Net and Portal technology being the latest. After acquiring the latest skills
IT staff then look to the next company who are upgrading or who can pay more for
their newly acquired skill.
However, this trend has not taken hold here, mainly because of the poor response
by local corporations to make best use of the IT technology to support business
growth. But this is coming to an end, and why - because of the faster growth of
IT technology (now a two year cycle instead of a five year cycle). Over the last
fifteen years IT staff have mainly remained static, as have many business
solutions, only progressing via promotion.
This situation is now changing, likewise business solutions, in that the
competition is so great, winning new customers is dependant on offering new
services. Therefore IT staff who can install, customise and support these
services are now the ones in demand. So IT staff are now more ready to change
company to gain the experience of new IT solutions, therefore becoming more
marketable. Therefore the trend to change jobs more often is starting to pick-up
.... Philip
I'll write on article on this interesting phenomena soon. Do you have
anything to add from your own experience? .... Susan
