Editor's Note

I wonder if you can help us out at CRS.  Due to increasing business and internal restructuring, we need to recruit a Secretary/ Receptionist.

This is a junior position but there is opportunity to grow and develop as we do.  The successful recruit must have a good knowledge of MS Word and have an excellent telephone manner and a flexible "can do" attitude.  If you know anyone who might like to work with a small, friendly team, then tell them to email their resume to Amelia at resume@crsitjobs.com.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Mainframe Mamas and Papas

I love that expression "Mainframe Mamas and Papas".  It refers to those, presumably aging, I.T. people who still work on mainframe as opposed to client server technology (though these people are quite young here in the Caribbean
J).

In the Caribbean, it is mainly the banks and insurance companies as well as the public service that have the huge number crunching requirements that rely on mainframes.  Until these systems are replaced by modern distributed platforms, organisations have a constant headache in finding skilled resources to work on their computer systems.

The problem is that Cobol and RPG, the most common programming languages used on mainframes, are considered old-fashioned and are no longer taught at UWI and other institutions.   Note that IBM still teaches RPG to support their many customers using their mid-range AS/400 machines.

Cobol and RPG programmers are now quite rare as client server technologies have proven to be much more attractive to software developers over the last couple of decades.  Cobol has been described as a dying language for more than 20 years now, even though there's no sign of it going away!

Companies are rarely prepared to train entry-level Cobol and RPG programmers so the supply is going to run out one day.  Eventually, It will be a race between how soon their current programmers retire or leave and how soon their organisations can transfer their legacy systems to other platforms.

So, what can be done to address this supply and demand problem?  Training is an obvious answer but  there must be an incentive to persuade a Computer Science graduate to focus his/her career on mainframe skills rather than more modern technologies.

One attraction could be higher than average salary packages, coupled with the opportunity to cross-train to the latest technology should a new platform be introduced.  There are also terrific opportunities abroad for people with a couple of years' experience as a Cobol/RPG programmer, as this shortage is world-wide.  There is little competition to get these jobs!

Here in Trinidad & Tobago, RPG consultant software developers charge some of the highest rates for the industry, and enjoy lucrative contracts because they have capitalised on their rare skills.

So, if you are a software developer looking to get an edge on the market, why not consider something different - Cobol and RPG - the latest, in-demand rare skills, to boost your income and your career.  Keep checking our jobs list to see the opportunities available now!
