Susan's Snippets

It was recently suggested to me that CRS should introduce a regular forum for networking and socialising for I.T. people.  As a matter of fact, we did organise an informal monthly get-together at a pizza place several years ago, but that gradually fizzled out.

There is a better alternative.  Come to an ITPS Poster or Breakfast Session.  These are put on every month or so, are inexpensive, you get to hear and discuss an interesting topic and, of course, there's the opportunity to network with fellow I.T professionals.

The next ITPS event is a Breakfast Session and will be held on Wednesday, 24th May at the Ballroom, Ambassador Hotel, Port of Spain 7:30am - 10am.  The topic is "IT Governance" presented by Philip Marshall.  For full details and registration information, go to http://www.itps.org.  You don't have to be a member to attend, though it will cost less if you are a member.

Women in I.T.

Information Technology is generally thought of as a mainly male profession.  This is supported by the fact that only 28% of the I.T. people on CRS's database are women.  Further quick analyses of our database show the following approximate percentages of women in the roles listed below:

    Analysis -  31%
    Programming - 28%
    Technical Administration - 23%
    Telecommunications - 15%
    Management  - 24%
    Sales - 25%

Of all the people we have placed in jobs, 27% are women, which correlates with the number of women available.  So at least we can say we have equal opportunity employers.  (Hey, I'm a woman; I'm good at analysing statistics).

Interestingly, 32% of the I.T. people on our database with degrees are women, which suggests that women are more likely to get tertiary education.  This also ties in with recent reports on the subject from the University of the West Indies.  Women also make up 27% of those with Associate Degrees and 24% of those with Certificates.

A survey done in the US in 2000 states " Women are roughly 20 percent of IT professionals. Women receive less than 28 percent of the computer science bachelor's degrees, down from a high of 37 percent in 1984. Computer science is the only field in which women's participation has actually decreased over time.
(AAUW Educational Foundation Tech-Savvy)

So, in fact, women are probably more prevalent in I.T. here in the Caribbean than in the United States.

I'm not surprised that women are more inclined to analysis roles than technical ones but I am disturbed that fewer than average (defined as 28%) are in management roles.  When I break the management roles down further, these are the approximate percentages of women in those roles:

Project/Team Leader - 28%
Project Manager - 26%
Manager (general) - 22%
IT Manager - 19%

Is it that there is still a glass ceiling for women in top I.T. positions?  Is it that women are not skilled enough for these jobs?  Or are women themselves rejecting the responsibilities of these jobs, perhaps because the work hours involved will interfere with their other roles as homemaker, wife and mother?

Let me know your views on Women in I.T. and why they are less likely than men to get the top I.T. jobs.  Are the number of women in I.T. declining in this region as is happening elsewhere?
